History of Makeup

Makeup has been around  for at least 6000 years and has played in nearly every society.

Check out where makeup started, and how it got to where it is today. 

4000 BC

Ancient Egyptians use unguent to keep their skin hydrated and wrinkle free.

Women appy dark green colour under the lid. They blacken around their eyes, eyelashes and brows with Kohl, which its sometimes made of soot.

1000 BC

Persian women and men use Henna dye's to stain their face and hair.

1st century

Romans used chalk powder, marl, crocodile dung and in the 6th century they used white lead as a part of their beauty regime.

Although they knew lead was poisonous their beauty came before sense. It caused disfigurements and even death.

1600s

A mother and daughters buisness for a whiten foundation lasted for 50 years.Selling, Aqua Tofana is a poison sold for cosmetic uses, it was arsenic, lead and possibly belladonna, it was colourless, tasteless liquid and was so easily mixed with water or wine. 600 deaths, mostly husbands that had been intentionaly poistened by their wifes but by 1676 a lot of women fled and the rest had got exucted.

1700s

In the 1700s lipstick eyebrow and hair dye became popular. Most makeup recipes involve herbs and plants, some with mercury and lead. Some women ruined their hair and face using the hair dye, experience hair loss, stomach problems, shakes and even death.

By 1800s victorian women plucked their eyebrows, buffed their nails and use clear promade on their lips and beetroot juice for the cheeks.

1820s

Rimmel create first non-tosic mascara.

1910s. The first pressed powder are introduced and soon after pressed blusher was invented.

1914s Max Factor starts selling makeup to the movie stars. And by 1920s Max Factor introduces lip gloss and the first eyelash curlers.

1950s

In the 1950s Audrey Hepburn made outlined cat eyes popular.

By 1970s eye shadows because very popular as well as cat eyes and women could be very creative with their makeup.

I'm glad i wasn't around with all that poisonous makeup was popular. I find it amazing how dramtically makeup has changed over century's and that we can get creative as we like.

What's on in Scotland.

If you want something to do over the winter months, why not come along to watch some great plays, pantos in some amazing theatres.

The Dolls.

The Dolls is on at the Tron theatre on the 1st and 2nd of november both dates starting at 8:30pm.

A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol is sure to please many over the Christmas period.

The play is on at The Lyceum Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh.

Tickets vary and you can get discounts if you have a bigger crowd coming along with you.

Age 6 to 106! will love it!

The Jungle book family workshop.

The Jungle book family workshop is on at Citizens Theatre.It is for 6-12 years with adult companions.

Explore characters, costumes and props from past christmas shows and treading the boards of the main stage also! Price is only £5. It is on only 14th at 11am and the15th december at 10:30am 2013.

Dragon.

£15.50/£12.50/£8 unemployed, disabled /£6 schools. Dragon is about one boys imagination through some difficult times in his life, very interesting i must say.

Burlesque show.

Britian's biggest Burlesque show arrives direct from London's west end. The show is playing at Theatre Royal Glasgow. Tickets vary at £26.90 to £27.90 it is for 18s only and lasts for 2h 30m on saturday 9th of november 2013.

Interview with Alexis Miller.

Alexis Miller is a professional makeup artist and hair stylist in glasgow for over 10 years experience in the buisness, So she knows her stuff and what it is like living in the kind of buisness i'd love to get into also.

E45 

E45 moisturiser has been a god send to me over the cold winter months when my skin becomes very dry. 

It has cleared up spots and blemishes on my skin which is always a plus!

You can find E45 pretty much anywhere, local chemist, boots and superdrug will also sell this product and only £2. BARGAIN!!!

Cheryl Cole uses this product and swears by it and along with me she also gives it 5/5.

Wigs on T.V and Film 

Wigs can totally transform a persons appearance and it can also be used to manipulate the audience into thinking that the actor or actress is playing a character of the opposite gender.

Martin Lawrence plays Big Momma in the film above, he wears a blonde wig, pretty much all through the film. This one below, i reckon he really suits ;-P

Johnny Depp who plays Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean has a real messy haired dreaded wig worn in the film. It has some treasures attached to it to show he has traveled around. I think this is a cool wig and i'd love one for myself too!

Lily Savage is Paul O'grady, he wears a big synthetic hard front wig. I love the big hair with the drag makeup, i think it really suits him too. ;-)

Shocked to see the beautiful Beyonce wearing a lace front wig, guess the celebs even have bad hair days!

Makeup in Films

Makeup i'm loving in some films is the ones that completely change the actors facial characteristics. I just love how all this is achieved and how realistic it can appear to the audience.

Naomi Watts is the actress who had the leading role playing Princess Diana. I love how the MUA made Naomi Watts looking more like Princess Diana than her actual self.

Daniel Day Lewis is the actor who played the role as Lincoln. The makeup artist for this is Kazuhiro Tsuji. Who i think is an amazing makeup artist, i love how real looking his work is and he can make anyone into anything.

The Terminator is another i love. Stanley Winston was the makeup artist who achieved this look for the film.

I like how the skin is peeling away to show the metal underneath to show that he is not human.

Would love to do this one day!

Avatar is an amazing! I love the makeup used in this film and just the over all look of the characters, the actress in this picture is Zoe Saldana and the makeup artist for the film was Tegan Taylor.

Sweeny todd is a awesome film, one from Tim Burton who loves the whole darkened pale appearances in his films. Ve Neill is the makeup artist for Johnny Depp in this film, i love this makeup and i still think Johnny is hot!

Task 3


1. What were your expectations on starting the course? I expected the course to be just as fun like it has been but more intense, i have only started so that is yet to come I reckon. I was nervous when applying because i wasn't sure if i could do the work because i hadn't any experience before but my lecturers teach in the best way and i always have fun learning here at WCS.

2. What are your initial thoughts on WCS and the media makeup course? I have heard in the past that WCS is the best around and now that i have started i agree completely. I absolutely love my media makeup course. I am inspired by my lecturers and the way they teach us makeup and hair in the easiest way.

3. What is your funniest moment of college life so far? I have been having a ball in all my classes but i think my funniest moment was in Essential skills class, when we had to make up 3 things about ourselves and 1 had to be a lie, it was lots of fun finding out more about the class and had a good right laugh too.

4. What is the most interesting thing you have learned or learned how to do so far? Blogging. I have never blogged before in my life, i believe that i am getting the hang of it the more i blog. The most interesting thing i have learned to do so far is special effects, i love using latex and wax with all the gory blood. ;-)

5. Who is your makeup idol? Kazuhiro Tsuji is one makeup artist that really inspires me. I love the work that he has done and it would be amazing to do great things just as he has done.

6. Why do you want to be a MUA? I would love to be a professional makeup artist, working in Theatre, Tv or Film. I have a big interest in makeup and would love to go far in this business.

A makeup artist that really inspires me is Kazuhiro Tsuji, born in Kyoto, Japan.

He was responsible for doing the makeup on some big films such as Lincoln, Planet of the Apes, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Tron Legacy, The Ring, and many other greats.

Tsuji originally started out sculpting and participating in other professions like painting, photography and art but by the time he reached high school, he was aspired to take on the role of a special effects makeup artist. This led to him liaising with Dick Smith who worked on films like The Godfather, The Exorcist and Amadeus. It was at this point in his life that his career started to blossom into the BAFTA winning makeup artist he is today.

I have a huge admiration for Tsuji's work because he is not afraid to experiment with his projects in an attempt to get the required effect and thrives on making looks that are a little different from the norm, giving a signature touch to his work. I believe Tsuji is a very talented man who i can learn much from and given the opportunity, It would be a great honor to work with him.
